Lives and works in Berlin
One of the central themes of Manfred Hamm, who has made an international name for himself since 1977 with some award-winning illustrated books, is that of transience. Among his best-known photographs are series on ruins of the industrial age, which he sees as "ancient sites of tomorrow". In addition to large-scale, conceptual photographic projects on aspects of European industrial culture, places of commerce and cultural buildings, he always kept an eye on his adopted home of Berlin. Hamm's Berlin oeuvre represents a unique body of images on the city's history and architecture. It was created between 1972 and 2010 and contains cityscape, architectural and aerial photographs as well as views of Berlin gardens and parks and sensitive portraits of Berlin artists, some of whom Hamm accompanied for years. His works are represented in numerous national and international collections. In 2020, the Stadtmuseum Berlin acquired the photographer's extensive Berlin archive with the support of the Berlin Senate and the Kulturstiftung der Länder.
