"I paint landscapes, not their many-sided appearance, but their structural substance, their structured arrangement." says Hofschen in an interview in 1977. It is not about to picture "real" landscapes, but to picture the relation between area and graphical form, according to calm and move or the the tense Together of extensive density and color coordinated lucency. "The settlement of lines and their dissolution zones (dynamic and lucency) leads to closed surfaces, that are emphasised by horizontal and vertical stabilizer of the painting. These areas rest or sustain, are volume, in dialogue with themselves and with the outside. Polarity between tension and dissolution." (Hofschen, 1977). Edgar Hofschen (1941-2016) studied painting at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf from1972 to 1975. In 1977 he took part in documenta 6 in Kassel, along with Gianfranco Zappettini and other Analytic artists. Topics in Edgar Hofschen's work are separation and connection, and the color in its materiality, as well as in its psycho-physiological effect. Hofschen used materials such as tent canvas, and sail cloth, which were worked with seams, tears, paper strips and wood glue.
